Bethany Meilani Hamilton-Dirks is an American surfer born February 8, 1990 in Kauai, Hawaii. She survived a shark attack on Hawaii's North Coast and continues to surf despite the loss of her left arm, an accident that provided the subject of a film.

She started surfing from the age of 5. Eight years later, on October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, she was attacked by a tiger shark over 4 meters tall and lost her left arm. Her brother as well as her best friend and her father witness the scene. Those around her make her understand that the return to the water will be difficult and that she may never be able to surf again. Passionate about surfing and thanks to her faith, she decides to surpass her destiny and plans to pursue her career. The media then travel to the small Hawaiian island to learn more about Bethany's story. She returned to the water only a month after the accident and decided to resume competitions in January 2004. Bethany refused any preferential treatment in relation to her handicap (the only difference with her competitors: a handle which allowed her to hold back her surfboard. when she passes under a wave) and wishes to pursue her dream of being world surfing champion. She recalls her blossoming when, in the ocean, she manages to surf despite the absence of an arm. She then won the Best Comeback Athlete ESPY Award at the ESPY Awards in August 2004.

On August 17, 2013, she married Adam Dirks in Kauai, Hawaii. On June 1, 2015, she gave birth to their first child, a boy, named Tobias Dirks. On March 23, 2018, they welcomed a second son, Wesley Phillip.
