Texas Teacher Loses Arms and Legs After a Cold Turns Deadly

Texas Teacher Loses Arms and Legs After a Cold Turns Deadly

In April 2023, Texas high school teacher Sherri Moody fell ill during a school trip, thinking it was just a common cold. But within days, her mild symptoms spiraled into something life-threatening. She developed a high fever, had trouble breathing, and was rushed to the hospital.

Doctors diagnosed her with double pneumonia, a severe lung infection often caused by the same bacteria responsible for strep throat. Her condition quickly deteriorated as she went into septic shock—a medical emergency where the body’s response to infection triggers dangerously low blood pressure and organ failure.

To save her life, doctors placed Sherri in a medically induced coma and administered powerful drugs to maintain blood flow to her vital organs. However, these lifesaving measures came with devastating side effects: the reduced circulation to her limbs caused tissue death.

When Sherri finally woke up, doctors had heartbreaking news—her arms and legs had turned black and lifeless. The only way to save her was to amputate both arms below the elbows and both legs below the knees.

Though she lost her limbs, Sherri survived against the odds. Her story is a powerful reminder of how quickly an ordinary illness can become catastrophic, and how strength and resilience can carry a person through unimaginable challenges. Today, Sherri continues to inspire others with her courage and determination to rebuild her life—proving that even in the face of tragedy, hope can endure.
