Manatees being fed sweet potatoes, while resembling the same vegetable

Manatees, often referred to as "sea cows," are large, gentle aquatic mammals native to shallow coastal areas and rivers. They typically measure between 9 to 10 feet in length and can weigh around 1,000 pounds. These herbivores primarily feed on seagrass, mangrove leaves, and algae, playing a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

Manatees are known for their friendly demeanor and lack of natural predators. In fact, even alligators tend to give them the right-of-way. However, human activities pose the greatest threat to their survival, including habitat loss and boat collisions. Due to their susceptibility to cold water, their range is influenced by seasonal changes, particularly in Florida where many reside. 🌊🐋
