This document aims to discuss the unique challenges that some below elbow amputee girls face in day-to-day life. Specifically, it will explore the physical, mental, and emotional toll that this condition can have on individuals and how those around them can be supportive. Furthermore, it will give an overview of resources available for those with the condition, in order to equip them with the tools to live an independent life. Finally, this document will provide a discussion of best practices when interacting with below elbow amputees in order to promote a more inclusive and understanding environment.
There are many below elbow amputee girls around the world who continue to face challenges in their everyday lives. For example, more than half of amputees experience problems with activities of daily living such as dressing, grooming, eating and other activities that require fine motor skills. In addition, many amputees find it difficult to access resources such as prosthetics, physical therapy and medical care due to lack of financial resources, accessibility and/or insurance coverage. These challenges can result in physical and emotional difficulties that can affect their quality of life and their ability to pursue life goals.
Despite the advances in technology, many below elbow amputee girls still struggle with the day-to-day tasks of living. From the simplest of tasks such as brushing their teeth to more complicated ones like maneuvering stairs, these young women, though resilient, often encounter difficulties that with proper support and guidance can be overcome. With the aid of assistive devices and prosthetics, these girls can enhance their lives and gain more independence. Additionally, with the help of counselors and therapists these individuals can finally achieve the goals and ambitions they once thought were unattainable.
