At 19, Amy Purdy was a vibrant young woman with dreams of traveling the world. But everything changed when she contracted meningococcal meningitis, a rare bacterial infection. Within 24 hours, she was in septic shock. Doctors gave her a 2% chance of survival. She lost both kidneys, her spleen, and most devastatingly, both legs below the knee.
Waking up in the hospital, Amy was shattered. She loved snowboarding, dancing, and adventure—how could she live without legs? But she refused to accept a life without movement. With grit and determination, she learned to walk on prosthetic legs and then, incredibly, to snowboard again.
She faced a new challenge—prosthetics weren’t designed for snowboarding. Instead of giving up, she designed her own. With custom-made legs, she returned to the slopes, proving to herself and the world that disability didn’t define her.
Her journey took her to competitive sports. She won a bronze medal in the 2014 Paralympics for snowboarding and later dazzled audiences on Dancing with the Stars, finishing as runner-up. She co-founded Adaptive Action Sports to help other athletes with disabilities pursue their dreams.
Amy Purdy turned tragedy into triumph. She didn't just survive—she thrived, inspiring millions to see obstacles as opportunities.
